Geek Rant

I'm in a bad mood. So I'm going to have a little rant. You are welcome to ignore it.

On We Heart It, if you search "Geek" a majority of the images displayed are people wearing glasses. Just because you wear glasses doesn't make you a geek.
As a geek who doesn't wear glasses, it annoys me when "non-geeks" think putting on a pair of glasses automatically makes you a geek. Yes I get it, lots of geeks do need glasses, but lots don't. It's not what you wear that makes you a geek! THAT'S A STEREOTYPE!
At Supanova this year there were heaps of different sorts of geeks. Old & young, fat & skinny, Geeks dressed as their favourite Anime character or Superhero, Geeks wearing tees that show one of their geeky interests and people who weren't wearing any geek related clothing, but that doesn't make them any less geeky than the ones in cosplay.
I hate Stereotypes, but it's hard to stop it when people don't understand it. You will find very few geeks who judge others. We (yes I'm classifying myself as a Geek) accept people from all groups and fandoms. If you like Star Wars more than Star Trek, thats fine, If you don't like Doctor Who, but love Anime, that's fine! I don't care. We can still be friends. There are heaps of things that are considered "geeky" that I don't like. I don't like Zombies or Vampires, I'm not a huge fan of Babylon 5 and Farscape, but I love Star Wars and Star Trek. I love Sci-Fi and Mythology, I love Doctor Who and random english tv series' that don't make any sense. If you don't judge me, I won't judge you :)

Okay, I've done ranting!

Geek Things I'm Looking Forward To...

Since Supanova is over for another year (sob!) I need a few more things to look forward to, to get me through this boring life :D

JULY
Elmo World Tour - I'm taking my 3 year old cousin to see Elmo and friends :)
He (and me) are going to have so much time!!! I know it's not that geeky... well I guess it is. I'm really the one that wants to go. I don't think my cousin has even seen any Elmo before!

AUGUST
The arrival of my Creeper Plushie from Jinx. I pre-ordered it as soon as the release date was annoucned! I can't wait :) It even has SOUND!!!!

SEPTEMBER
Possible Marianas Trench Australian tour - They have been mentioning an Australian tour on their twitter for awhile. They better come to PERTH!

DREDD!! Karl Urban playing the title character! It's too good to be true and I can't wait! I didn't even know the trailer had been released!!!

NOVEMBER
My birthday :D Probably aren't going to do anything special.

DECEMBER
THE HOBBIT! There is no geek in the world that isn't excited about The Hobbit! Boxing Day I will be there, at the cinema READY! I'm so excited!!! AHHHHHHHHH!

OTHERS
I'm sure there are other movies I'm excited about but just can't remember.
The possibility of Emma coming to Albany to visit :P

Supanova Recap Of Awesome!

SUPANOVA WAS AWESOME!
It's always awesome! But this one was really awesome! I met some wonderful people, got some autographs from amazing people and got to hang out with Emma.

The best thing that happened all weekend was when (as we were leaving) there was a random guy playing football in the carpark... but that random guy ended up being ALFIE ALLEN! Theon Greyjoy from Game Of Thrones!!! And then this happened....
... me with Alfie Allen! Before I heard him during his seminar, I assumed that he might be a little bit of a tosser :P but he isn't! He's so nice and polite and funny and quite shy. I guess he's still not used to being famous. I LOVE ALFIE!

I also had a conversation with Australian Author Matthew Reilly about Harry Potter and Alexander McQueen. He liked the evietees tee I was wearing. He knew who the characters were (GO MATTHEW) and then I realised he was wearing an awesome Alexander McQueen tee. He then told me he knew nothing about fashion and didn't really knew who Alexander McQueen was until after he bought the shirt!
I also saw Vic Mignogna again. He's my favourite voice actor. He does the voices of many Anime characters, including Ed in Fullmetal Alchemist and Zero in Vampire Knights and Dark in DN Angel. My sister Kaitlin made a Dark plushie for him to sign. He was so excited about it.
Supanova was awesome! I also managed not to spend much money. I bought The Art of The Avenger book and a few smaller items. I spent most of my Supanova money buying Lord Of The Rings Lego at Target :) LORD OF THE RINGS LEGO! I just can't get over the fact I have Karl Urban in Lego form NOW!

Emma and I are planning a Supanova post on The Curiosity Complex, so stay tuned for that! Now back to my real boring life! :P

Geek Update

Howdy Geeklings
It's been awhile since I did a proper post. I just haven't been in the right mood/frame of mind. Which sucks.

A few updates :) I'm house sitting for a friend who is in Finland (very jealous of her) which means for the past 2 weeks I've been living on my own, away from home and I LOVE IT! I had a couple of lonely nights. But I do have a gorgeous kitty to look after.
This is Ruby the Ragdoll. She's a little derpy princess! I'm going to miss her when I leave :) It's going to be hard to move back home. Especially since Dads' girlfriend, her son and their cats have moved in while I've been away. I've mentioned it before. I've never lived with a teenage boy before, and I have a feeling that I may butt heads with Dads' girlfriend. We will see.

I've made myself an About.me page. It's a contents page of where to find me on the internet. Check it out!

Supanova Perth is THIS WEEKEND! Since I last post about Supanova, Adam Baldwin has cancelled, which SUCKS! but Alfie Allen aka Theon Greyjoy from Game Of Thrones (and Lily Allens little brother) is now attending. I don't think I will worry too much about autographs and photos with the guests. There isn't anyone going that I'm super in love with. I'm just going to go at my own pace and relax. Plus I don't have much money this year (stupid phone bills) and I'd rather spend money on awesome geek stuff. Emma and I are going to be doing some posts for our joint blog The Curiosity Complex. So stay tuned for them :)

I've started reading Wired magazine. The UK version! It's amazing! I'm a couple of months behind from the current issue, because I'm in Australia its cheaper to get the older ones at my local bookstore. I can't wait for the July issue, which has an article about Notch (creator of Minecraft) I love the magazine so much that I have also bought some back issues from eBay.
this man created Moshi Monsters. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

I have a couple of TV series coming in the mail. Identity featuring Aidan Gillen and Rev featuring Tom Hollander. I can't wait until they show up.

Target Toysale starts on Thursday and we can dress up. But I don't know if I want too. Everyone is freaking out about it this year, because it was moved at short notice :( I have a Slytherin Student costume that I could wear, but I just don't feel it :)

That's it for today. I can't really tell you when my next post will be. Follow me on Twitter or Tumblr if you want more regular geekiness :)

Book Review - Harry Potter Page To Screen!

This is a cross post from my new blog The Curiosity Complex.

First thing, first. This book is amazing and (even though heaps of people will probably complain) totally worth the price tag.
Also, this is a look and feel review. I plan to read it at my own speed (slow) and will try and do another review when I'm finished.

Harry Potter - Page To Screen, The Complete Filmmaking Journey by Bob McCabe

Purchased (special order that took over 2 months to arrive) from Dymocks.
Price: $110.00 but considering in Sydney at the Harry Potter exhibition they wanted $169.00, $110 is an excellent price.
This book is huge! It weighs 3.5kg (yes I did weigh it) and I was afraid that it wasn't going to fit on my bookshelf (but it does... geek dance). There are 540 beautiful glossy pages, some of them featuring clear embossed images, like shoeprints, wands and feathers, and there are a few fold out pages. Including one of the front featuring some of the main characters.

So, the contents...the book is divided into three parts:

Part I: The Making of Harry Potter
Introduction
Setting the Scene
HP and the Sorcerer's Stone
HP and the Chamber of Secrets
HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban
HP and the Goblet of Fire
HP and the Order of the Phoenix
HP and the Half-Blood Prince
HP and the Deathly Hallows

This section is full of candid photos (including Voldemort reading a magazine), set design illustrations and behind the scene photos. It also includes strange things, like the characters heights, and tidbits from the various directors.

Part II: The Art of Harry Potter
Introduction
Characters: Costuming
Locations: Set Design
Creatures: Special Makeup and Digital Effects
Artefacts: Prop Making

This is my favourite section. It shows the characters costumes, including fabric swatches, information on tattoos, wands and makeup. It also showed art designs of main locations, including a snow covered model of Hogwarts (which is actually covered in salt, not snow) and designs from JK Rowling of Diagon Alley etc.
This section brought back a lot of memories from the Harry Potter Exhibition I went too in Sydney. Props of creatures and random artefacts that I saw, but had forgotten I'd seen.

Part III: Epilogue
The Golden Boards
Acknowledgements and Colophon

The last section isn't that exciting, but a little sad. Featuring photos from throughout the filming of Harry Potter, including the last group photos.

I've posted some photos of some of the pages I liked. Sorry about the quality of the photos. I used Hipstermatic, because for some reason my Camera app on my iPhone doesn't work :|

Sirius Blacks' tattoo designs

Barty Crouch Jr aka David Tennant

Severus Snape

My 2 favourite Harry Potter baddies :)
Blueprints of Hogwarts
Blueprints of the covered bridge that leads to Hagrids house.

I hope you enjoyed this quick look at Harry Potter - Page To Screen. When I picked this book up I ordered another Harry Potter book. Harry Potter Film Wizardry. So stay tuned for the review of that one :)
