Wednesday Wishlist

The booky wooky edition! I have a lot of books, as most of you saw in my #geekspace post! I love to read. I have discovered that I own more non-fiction books than fiction books! :)

Here are a few books I really really want to add to my collection!!!

Colour Me Good - Benedict Cumberbatch by Mel Elliott
A BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH Colouring book! How could you not want it?? I love colouring books, I have heaps in my wishlist on Fishpond.

I'm into Pirates... again!
But I don't know too much about real pirates, I googled what the best non-fiction books about pirates are and found these. Under The Black Flag by David Cordingly and A General History of Pirates (written in 1724) by Captain Charles Johnson

Wonders Of Life by Prof. Brian Cox & Andrew Cohen - I have the books that go with the other 2 Wonders series (Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe) so I just need this one to complete my collection. I love Prof Brian Cox, he makes my brain very happy, with his science... and he's good looking too! Plus he has the best "Profound Thinking Face" EVER!

Epic Search For The Magicians!

My internet has been on the fritz :(
It makes me realise how much I use the internet during the day!
Today, I had the day off work (YAY) so I decided to head into town and do some jobs that I can only do on weekdays, like the post office etc.
I went searching for a copy of The Magicians by Lev Grossman.

I've heard so much about it and really want to read it... (it's been described as Harry Potter for adults) but don't want to download it, because real books are so much better! I went to Dymocks, and only bought What Does The Fox Say? children's book! Yes, you heard me right, they have turned the song into a book... the illustrations are amazing... but a little creepy.
I then head across the road to a local 2nd hand book store. I didn't find The Magicians, but I found a copy of Cloud Atlas... I was very excited, I've had it in my wishlist for ages!
I then walked up the road to try another book store. No luck there either, but they finally restocked their New Zealand Lonely Planet guides, so I purchased one, so now I can start planning some ideas for my trip.
Then I tried the library... they didn't even have Lev Grossman listed on their system! I was quite upset. So I walked back to my car and came home.

I tried to take some photos while I was out. I took one photo and my phone died :(

This is one of the many old churches in Albany. I realised today, while standing in Dymocks, how beautiful it is. It's asymmetrical, beautiful windows and beautiful lines. I've never been in before.

I want to learn how to use my DSLR camera. Technically it's not mine, it belongs to my sister and I, but she has a bigger share... but it's in my procession at the time. I found some ebooks to help. I should get it out and take some photos.

Neon Pilgrim

by Lisa Dempster

I picked this book up a couple of years ago on a whim.

The cover was interesting and a quick read of the back

"Seriously unfit and unmotivated..." I'm seriously unfit and unmotivated!

 "...Lisa Dempster is an unlikely candidate for a gruelling outdoor adventure...." hmmm.... not a big fan of this "outdoors" stuff! 

"....When her life needs a shake-up...." oohhh That's what I NEED!

 "...she decides the only thing for it is to hike the henro michi, a 1200 kilometre..." say what!!?? how many!?

 "...Buddhist pilgrimage through the mountains of Japan..." ooooh, I like Japan!

 "...Lisa’s journey from overweight dole bludger to intrepid explorer is a witty and fascinating insight into Japan’s famed pilgrimage." okay.... you had me at seriously unfit!

I read it in 2 days!

It's her personal account of the adventure. All the blisters and temples and wonderfully old Japanese pilgrims. It's the first book that made me start thinking about doing Pilgrimages.

I would love to do the Henro Michi one day!

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

I didn't know what to put here.

Do I write Harry Potter series....? but thats 7 books so I would be cheating.

Do I choose my favourite book...? which is The Prisoner of Azkaban

No.

I decided on the book that started it all.

The first one.

The Philosophers Stone

(or The Sorcerers Stones in US)

It started the love.

The passion.

THE FREAKING OBSESSION!

I started reading when they announced they were making a movie.

At that point the 4th book (The Goblet of Fire) had just been released.

Then on, I stood in line at 5am to get the 5th, 6th & 7th book!

I actually got pneumonia after the release of the 6th book :(

and yes, if you're wondering it's the same Marian Keyes that writes all those novels...
Which I haven't read because they're not really my thing.... I assume....
They seem to be very romance/family/friendship related...
give me a good fantasy or sic-fi any day!

Anyway
It's my favourite cookbook.
Marian suffered really bad depression and anxiety and baking saved her.
It saved me too.
When I'm feeling sad or depressed I bake (if I can)
There are some pretty weird recipes in it, but some really yummy ones too.
One day I will make everything in it.
Even the stuff I don't like.

Inferno by Dan Brown out tomorrow

Tomorrow Dan Brown releases his new book, Inferno.

It's the 4th in the series featuring Robert Langdon. 

The first one being Angels and Demons, then The Da Vinci Code and then The Lost Symbol.

I love his Robert Langdon books.

I love how much research he does and all the information you get. 

It's a fictional story full of real life things, events in history etc.

This one, as the title may suggest is based around Dante's Inferno an old book about the 7 levels of hell (and other things, but I have never read it)

The Australian cover (on the left) is so much nicer than the other.

I hope mine is the left one.

I pre-ordered it ages ago.

Hopefully I get a call tomorrow saying that it's in :D

I'm hoping it will inspire me to read again.

I hope I can get it finished.

I've been reading the Judge Dredd comics.

I have them on my iPad.

I also have the Star Trek comics set between the first (new) movie and Star Trek Into Darkness

plus the prequel to Star Trek Into Darkness.

Anyway.

IGGPPC, Cakes & Book Rewards

This weekend I'm going camping.

I mentioned it before.

But I didn't mention that it's with Kids Central

And I'll actually be helping supervise 20, 8-12 year olds.

They're doing an overnight bike ride.

I'm not riding, but I am transporting dinner to them on Saturday

Then staying overnight.

Right at the moment I'm baking dessert.

2 HUGE cakes.

One Apple and Custard Cake

and one Pineapple and Coconut Cake.

I hope they like them.

Seriously I'm really confused.

So the aforementioned Coconut Cake Recipe is:

1 cup Self Raising Flour

1 cup of Sugar

1 Cup of Coconut

3/4 Cup of Milk

Mix together and bake in 180c for 30 minutes!

I've always been told that a cake will not work unless there is egg in it

So how does the coconut cake work without eggs!!

HOW?!?!

I don't know how...

but it works!

Bought this book today.

Haven't looked at it yet.

Using it as a reward for finishing all my work today!

Almost done!

Just need to wrap up the cakes and put them in the freezer :D

I'm giving up sugar.
Well cutting back to begin with.
Sugar makes me feel gross!
This book has some really yummy recipes in it.
Hopefully some good snack food for lunch etc.

NOSE CRUSHER

I'm in the process of finishing off all my childcare study for the year. It's the last PUSH! Considering there was a period (which lasted since I finished my Prac in September to about... NOW) where I was positive I wasn't going to finish. But with help from a wonderful lecturer (who pretty much forced me to sit down with her) I've spent the last couple of days trying to get everything finished.
I HAVE ONE THING LEFT TO GO, but it's the biggest! It's my prac workbook and it covers 6 different units, and most of it relates back to my prac (which I can't really remember!)

BUT I CAN DO IT!

I'm also excited because next year I'm going back to finish off the Cert 3 and 4 units, I also get to do more prac, but this time in a proper childcare centre. One day a week for 20 weeks. 10 weeks with babies and 10 weeks with "big kids" ie 3-5year olds. I'm excited.

It features pretty much every excellent youtuber in the UK, as well as a voice cameo from none other than NEIL freaking GAIMAN! I need to be Benjamin Cook.
And to make him even more awesome. He's the co-author of Doctor Who: The Writers Tale... and do you know who he co-wrote it with??? Russell T Davies! The book is pretty much just a collection of emails and text messages between Ben and RTD. The book is amazing, full of all sorts of information about Doctor Who, other RTD created series like Torchwood and Queer as Folk (UK Version). It's a pretty amazing book. I have The Final Chapter version which is a "nose crushing" 704 pages. I say "nose crushing" because, if like me, you read in bed and fall asleep and drop the book on your nose... it's a crusher!

Benjamin Cook is also amazing. I wish I could have his hair... (this picture is for all you lazy people who don't watch the video!)

Not very many 30 year old men can pull off that look... but Ben can :D

Hoping to pick up my iPad Mini tomorrow. Depending on how much I get paid. I did work extra last week. I have a list of things to pay for this week and it equals about $400... so anything more than that and I can eat during the week :D

We will see. I will do an unboxing. Even though you have all seen them before and they're a little boring in photo form :D

Birthday Swag #1

Everything, except the Sanity gift card, I bought using the money that my dad gave me. I haven't received anything from mum and my sister Kaitlin yet (Kaitlin is making me something, that is so awesome I'm probably going to die of awesomeness when I get it) and I ate the present that Alex gave me :D

You really can't go wrong with science, macaroons and Pixar movies!

DIARY SEASON!

It's Diary season!

I can't wait! There is nothing as good as opening a brand new diary and making the first mark... rather selfishly of myself, the very first thing I write in is "My Birthday!" :D

One of the best things about new diaries, is deciding what to buy!

Believe it or not, I think I'm over Moleskine. I've been using Moleksine Diaries for many years, but I want something more unique, more awesome :D

I have found a couple that I really like and I'm going to share them with you.

DELFONICS 2013 DIARY - A5 (15X21CM) - WEEKLY VERTICAL - POUCH - KHAKI

This, is by far, my favourite! But with a price tag of $79.95... I don't know if I can justify it! It is refillable, but I'm not known for sticking to one thing. Plus the refill that comes with it is a Vertical weekly, and there isn't enough space for my huge handwriting and random scribbles! BUT JUST LOOK AT IT!!! 

The next choice is a little bit more conservative, but has the same issue of having the Vertical Weekly layout.

DELFONICS 2013 DIARY - A5 (15X21CM) - WEEKLY VERTICAL - ELASTIC - GREEN

It's a little cheaper... $59.95, but doesn't have the awesome pockets for keeping awesome things in :D But it is a pretty colour, and it looks like it feels really nice :D 

Or I can just stick to what I know and geek out by just getting this:

MOLESKINE 2013 DIARY - WEEKLY NOTEBOOK - LIMITED EDITION 'STAR WARS' - LARGE (13X21CM) - BLACK - HARD COVER

You really can't go wrong with Yoda! :D I'm using the weekly notebook format now. Some weeks I find there isn't enough space, other weeks I have nothing to write. YODA!

NOTEMAKER is seriously the best ever Stationery shop EVER! I just wish I had heaps of money!

So what do you think? I need a little bit of help with this one!!!

DELFONICS 2013 DIARY - A6 (10X15CM) - WEEKLY NOTEBOOK - LINEN - TURQUOISE

It's smaller (only A6) but it's a Weekly Notebook layout, plus it's only $29.95 and it's a pretty colour! Don't ask me whats written on the front. It's a Japanese made diary with German written all over it! I think this one might be the best bet. NO MATTER HOW MUCH I LOVE THE FIRST ONE!

I can get a Weekly Notebook refill for the first one for $29.95, but that would take the full price of the Diary to over $100 and that is WAY too much!

City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Last night I started City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare.

Then this morning I found out it was being made into a movie. So I "IMDBed" it to see who was playing everyone, and I was pleasantly surprised, and now SUPER EXCITED to see it!

The main character Clary is being played Lily Collins, who I haven't seen in much, but she's in Mirror Mirror (which I havent seen!) and she's Phil Collins daughter, so she's awesome :D

Her mother is being played by Lena Headley, who plays Cersei Lannister in Game Of Thrones and is in the new Judge Dredd film with Karl Urban.

Clary's best friend Simon is being played by Robert Sheehan from Misfits.

Jace the Shadowhunter (and I predict the "love interest") is being played by Jamie Campbell Bower (who really should brush his hair or something!)

Hodge, the Shadowhunter tutor/leader/thing is being played by Jared Harris, who was Moriaty in the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes.

Luke (who I'm not sure how he fits into the story yet) is played by Aidan Turner, from Being Human and soon to be in The Hobbit!

The bad guy, Valentine is being played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who will make an awesome bad guy... JUST LOOK AT HIM!

AND AND AND! Kevin Durand! is playing Emil (but I haven't met him in the book yet!

For those who don't know me... I have a thing for the man pictured above! Kevin Durand! I just love him! He's easily one of my favouritest actors! :D I can't wait to see this movie.

It's out August 2013.

Book Review - Harry Potter Page To Screen!

 This is a cross post from my new blog The Curiosity Complex.

First thing, first. This book is amazing and (even though heaps of people will probably complain) totally worth the price tag.

Also, this is a look and feel review. I plan to read it at my own speed (slow) and will try and do another review when I'm finished.

Harry Potter - Page To Screen, The Complete Filmmaking Journey by Bob McCabe

Purchased (special order that took over 2 months to arrive) from Dymocks.
Price: $110.00 but considering in Sydney at the Harry Potter exhibition they wanted $169.00, $110 is an excellent price.
This book is huge! It weighs 3.5kg (yes I did weigh it) and I was afraid that it wasn't going to fit on my bookshelf (but it does... geek dance). There are 540 beautiful glossy pages, some of them featuring clear embossed images, like shoeprints, wands and feathers, and there are a few fold out pages. Including one of the front featuring some of the main characters.

So, the contents...the book is divided into three parts:

Part I: The Making of Harry Potter 
Introduction 
Setting the Scene 
HP and the Sorcerer's Stone 
HP and the Chamber of Secrets 
HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban 
HP and the Goblet of Fire 
HP and the Order of the Phoenix 
HP and the Half-Blood Prince 
HP and the Deathly Hallows 

This section is full of candid photos (including Voldemort reading a magazine), set design illustrations and behind the scene photos. It also includes strange things, like the characters heights, and tidbits from the various directors.

Part II: The Art of Harry Potter 
Introduction 
Characters: Costuming
Locations: Set Design 
Creatures: Special Makeup and Digital Effects 
Artefacts: Prop Making 

This is my favourite section. It shows the characters costumes, including fabric swatches, information on tattoos, wands and makeup. It also showed art designs of main locations, including a snow covered model of Hogwarts (which is actually covered in salt, not snow) and designs from JK Rowling of Diagon Alley etc.
This section brought back a lot of memories from the Harry Potter Exhibition I went too in Sydney. Props of creatures and random artefacts that I saw, but had forgotten I'd seen.

Part III: Epilogue

The last section isn't that exciting, but a little sad. Featuring photos from throughout the filming of Harry Potter, including the last group photos.
